THE PRODUCT
SKINCEUTICALS: C E FERULIC WITH 15% L-ASCORBIC ACID
I receive a laundry list of product review requests. But the brand SkinCeuticals and their C E Ferulic with 15% L-Ascorbic Acid is probably THE most highly requested brand/product thus far. And since I’ve been meaning to review another vitamin C infused serum, what better way than to do a deep dive into what has been identified (within the beauty industry) as the “gold standard” of vitamin C serums, SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic with 15% L-Ascorbic Acid.
Before we dive into the ingredients and whether the claims are substantiated, let’s review the ethos behind the brand. Founded in 1994 by Dr. Sheldon Pinnell, SkinCeuticals establishes its business model through scientifically researched and developed skincare products – utilizing data garnered from multiple patents and academic publications.
Well, it was the first single-phase solution compositions of L-ascorbic acid that provided enhanced stability, solubility, and photoprotective effect for treatment of radical-induced skin as compared to past products and competitors. This led to its patent (U.S. Patent No. 7,179,841), granted in 2007.
Since, this is a patented product, the composition of C E Ferulic with 15% L-Ascorbic Acid becomes public which gives the consumer more transparency to its formulation. This becomes a key point of interest when determining levels of sensitivities or whether a claim may be properly substantiated.
Here is what we know about the % concentration of each component for this single-phase solution based on the patent:
- 5% to 20%: L-ascorbic acid
- 0.5% to 5.0%: Cinnamic acid derivative (selected from p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, caffeic acid, or sinapinic acid)
- 10% to 60%: Solvent comprising a glycol ether and an alkanediol
- 0.5% to 1.5%: Phenoxyethanol
- 0.3% to 1.5%: Panthenol
- 0.5% to 5.0%: Triethanolamine
- 0.05% to 0.3%: Sodium hyaluronate
- 1.5% to 5.0%: Surfactant
- 100%: Water
- pH of no more than about 3.5.
But ultimately, in order to have photoprotective effects and at least 88-90% ascorbic acid stability, the formulation needs to be as follows:
- 63.4%: Water
- 15%: L-ascorbic acid
- 10%: Di(ethylene glycol) ethyl ether
- 5%: 1.2-Propanediol
- 3%: Polyoxyethylene 23 lauryl ether
- 0.5%: Triethanolamine
- 0.5%: trans-Ferulic acid
- 1.0%: Tocopherol
- 1.0%: Phenoxyethanol
- 0.5%: Panthenol
- 0.1%: Sodium hyaluronate
- pH = 3.2
Alright then, let’s look at the ingredients!
THE INGREDIENTS
THE CLAIMS
Ok, the claims as detailed on the SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic with 15% L-Ascorbic Acid website for the following:
“A patented daytime vitamin C serum that delivers advanced environmental protection and improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, loss of firmness, and brightens skin’s complexion. U.S. Patent No. 7,179,841.
C E Ferulic features a synergistic antioxidant combination of 15% pure vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid), 1% vitamin E (alpha tocopherol), and 0.5% ferulic acid to enhance protection against environmental damage caused by free radicals that can contribute to atmospheric aging. This vitamin C serum helps neutralize free radicals induced by UVA/UVB, infrared radiation (IRA), and ozone pollution (O3), which may lead to visible signs of accelerated skin aging. In addition to antioxidant protective benefits, C E Ferulic improves signs of aging and photodamage, the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and the loss of firmness, while brightening skin’s complexion.
- Provides advanced environmental protection by neutralizing damaging free radicals
- Visible anti-aging benefits, such as the improvement of the appearance of lines and wrinkles, loss of firmness, and brightens skin’s complexion
- Neutralizes free radicals on the upper layer of the skin to help prevent the impact of ozone damage to skin
- Once absorbed, this vitamin C serum remains effective for a minimum of 72 hours
- Paraben-free and ideal for normal, dry, and sensitive skin types
- Tested suitable for use post-laser, always consult with a physician for individual post-procedure care
15% L-ascorbic acid: Lauded for its superior antioxidant benefits, this highly potent form of pure vitamin C helps neutralize free radicals and protect against oxidative stress while providing visible anti-aging benefits.
1% alpha tocopherol: This pure form of vitamin E neutralizes free radicals and replenishes skin lipids. It has been proven to act synergistically with vitamin C.
0.5% ferulic acid: A plant-based antioxidant, ferulic acid neutralizes free radicals and enhances the antioxidant benefits and stability of vitamins C and E.“
Ok, let’s parse this baby to its bare bones based on its ingredients:

THE GOOD & THE BAD
If we go purely by overall ingredients relative to claim substantiation, the SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic with 15% L-Ascorbic Acid aligns with the patent and matches with available scientific research.
Yet, there were two skeptical ingredients included: triethanolamine and laureth-23. Triethanolamine, a preservative that functions as a surfactant or pH adjuster and often acts as a skin-conditioning agent; but offers the potential for allergic contact dermatitis. Then there is laureth-23, a surfactant and emulsifier with little to no science-based research available as it relates to skin-specific benefits.
THE UGLY (PRICE)
SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic® with 15% L-Ascorbic Acid ($166)
DO I NEED THIS?
If the price point is way outside your realistic budget, then check out some of the Dupes I’ve listed that include all three core ingredients: vitamin C, ferulic acid, and tocopherol (vitamin E). If you already tried the SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic with 15% L-Ascorbic Acid but want to just mix it up, there is a wide range of price points and brands to explore!
Note: Since this is patented, and an active (until 2025) one at that, any product that directly replicates this formulation would be subject to legal action from the folks at SkinCeuticals. So it’s safe to say unless a brand is looking to take that risk, any of the available Dupes out there would be adjusted accordingly.
Again, the choice is always yours!

ARE THE CLAIMS BACKED BY SCIENCE?
This is definitely the FIRST time that a brand really nailed it on the head when it comes to scientific R&D and proper claims substantiation. In fact, the website even details the following statement outlining the patent and the use of peer-reviewed scientific publication:
“Mentioned extensively in peer-reviewed scientific journals, C E Ferulic is a vitamin C serum demonstrated to provide powerful environmental protection due to a synergistic combination of 15% pure vitamin C (l-ascorbic acid), pure vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) and 0.5% ferulic acid. It is formulated under the Duke Antioxidant patent. Vitamin C is a highly-potent antioxidant that by its structure has difficulty being effectively absorbed by skin. The Duke Antioxidant patent outlines the formulation parameters required for effective delivery of vitamin C to skin: 1) pure l-ascorbic acid (vitamin C); 2) an acidic pH within the 2.0-3.5 pH range and; 3) a concentration between 10%-20%. SkinCeuticals is the only brand to formulate antioxidants according to these parameters.”
Ah, to wish for ALL brands to follow this level and standard – a girl can dream, right?
This was an easy one when we determine whether the claims really are backed by science.
The answer to that question?
The patent helps with the initial review in looking at the scientific flow and determination for the formulation. And the use of the website to educate the consumer, followed by what is publicly available in terms of scientific research; well, it’s just beautiful.
Until my next review!
