THE PRODUCT
MARA: ALGAE + MORINGA UNIVERSAL FACE OIL
We’ve said this before and we’ll say this again, the facial oil trend seems to be here to stay. Whether we’ll see this type of product continue its reign in ten to twenty years is unknown. One thing is clear, however, we’ve seen facial oils EVERYWHERE – with different iterations and in every beauty brand that you can possibly imagine. So when we saw the combination of marine-derived botanicals formulated within facial oils, it was a no brainer. Enter our review of the MARA Algae + Moringa Universal Face Oil.
Reviewing this product and (more specifically) the brand, MARA, is one that seems to be full circle. Let me explain. Years ago, I randomly stumbled upon Allison McNamara’s YouTube channel where she provided style and beauty tips to a small group of subscribers. I loved her easy videos which provided this cool-girl aesthetic and sensibility, a pre-influencer time if you will.
Fast forward years later and she has created MARA, a product brand that draws its inspiration from nature. From the sea.
It certainly sounds strange but marine actives and the benefits of biomaterials derived from the sea is not a new concept. In fact, a 2018 published review stated that marine algae was considered as an abundant source of bioactive compounds with cosmeceutical potential. The review focused on the beneficial effects of marine algae-derived carbohydrates for skin health.
If we think about the very nature of algae as a plant, the use of this bioactive material in skincare and cosmeceuticals is a no-brainer. Algae plants are known for their diverse adaptation with respect to living conditions; able to survive in extreme conditions and stressed environments. With such a robust plant, it was only natural that the beauty industry would eventually draw from the power of this workhorse for its use to improve skin’s elasticity and for anti-aging purposes.
So, focus on plants originating from both lakes and ocean bodies are slowly making waves. Yes, I made that pun and not ashamed of it.
Alright then, let’s look at the ingredients!

SKIN TYPE & USE
According to MARA, the Algae + Moringa Universal Face Oil may be applied per the following:
Use a half dropper full to cleansed skin as the last step in your skincare routine for youthful, healthy, hydrated skin.
THE GOOD & THE BAD
We’ve covered varying facial oils and the brands that sing its botanical praises. Yet, we’ve not touched on facial oils or any brands that have focused on marine-derived ingredients. We hadn’t, until now.
The MARA Algae + Moringa Universal Face Oil is chocked full of seed oils, fruit oils, and extracts. There are no synthetics within this formulation. In fact, we counted a total combination of eleven (11) botanicals extracts and oils within the total thirteen (13) ingredients formulated in this Algae + Moringa Universal Face Oil. That’s roughly 85% of the foundation!
As in all products, just because something is made entirely of extracted oils and butters, doesn’t mean it comes without issues. In fact, tocopherol (vitamin E) use has been shown to produce mild dermatitis – just something to be aware of.
And the MARA Algae + Moringa Universal Face Oil is clearly marketed as a luxurious botanical facial oil. Yet, we are a bit baffled at why the price point is shockingly high considering that most of the oils and extracts can be easily sourced. Of course, we can’t speak to the process by which the good folks at MARA may extract and manufacture their products. But it certainly something to think about.
THE UGLY (PRICE)
MARA Algae + Moringa Universal Face Oil ($72)
DO I NEED THIS?
As we said earlier, the price point may be a deciding factor for you. In the end, it all boils down to this – it’s just a facial oil. There are a myriad of iterations and options if you are looking to venture into the facial oil realm. However, when you factor in the marine-derived component (such as alaria esculenta and plankton extract), then it morphs into a slightly different animal.
Yet, again, the growth of marine-derived products is slowly expanding. And it is becoming increasingly easier to attain products that harness the beneficial minerals of the sea.
In the end, it all comes down to sourcing and the extraction process. Unless brands are transparent about their raw materials, production/manufacturing, and formulation processes – we as consumers need to use our educated decision making and purchasing power in order to drive the industry.
And again, the choice is always yours!

ARE THE CLAIMS BACKED BY SCIENCE?
If we look at each ingredient highlighted in the MARA Algae + Moringa Universal Face Oil, the claims relative to these components are substantiated.
In fact, it was quite fascinating to discover that the plankton extract (by way of the DNA repair enzyme, photolyase) provides restorative and reparative capabilities. Either way, if you were looking to jump on the facial oil train and you don’t have a price point barrier, then the MARA Algae + Moringa Universal Face Oil may be the oil for you.
